Shared Desert Tours in Morocco (Small Group, Private Tent)

Our shared desert tours let you reach the Sahara for less by sharing the vehicle with other travellers, while you keep your own room and private tent. A shared desert tour in Morocco is the lowest-cost way to reach the Sahara without driving yourself. You share a vehicle and a fixed route with other travellers, so the cost of transport is split. What you do not share is where you sleep.

On our shared tours, each booking — a solo traveller, a couple, a family — has its own room in the hotel and its own tent in the desert, with a private shower and toilet. This page explains how our shared tours work, compares the three routes we run, and is honest about when a private tour is the better choice.

All three routes stop at Aït Ben Haddou, listed by UNESCO as the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a striking example of the earthen architecture of southern Morocco.

Share the ride, never the room

This is the simple rule behind every shared tour we run:

You shareYou do not share
The vehicle (air-conditioned minibus or 4×4)Your hotel room
The driver and the fixed routeYour desert tent
The timetable and the stopsYour bathroom — every tent has its own shower and toilet
Dinner tables and the campfireYour bed

Some budget desert tours put strangers in the same tent or use camps with one shared toilet block. We do not. Every tent at our camp, Mouhou Luxury Camp in Erg Chebbi, is private, and we do not use basic camps with shared bathrooms.

Travelling solo? You get your own room and your own tent. A single supplement may apply — a solo traveller pays €230 instead of €160–€170.

How our shared desert tours work

The vehicle and the group

You travel in a modern air-conditioned minibus or 4×4 with other travellers on the same route. The maximum group size is [CONFIRM MAXIMUM GROUP SIZE]. Group sizes change from day to day; on quieter dates you may be in a smaller group [CONFIRM minimum numbers and what happens if a departure has very few bookings].

The route and the times are fixed

The route, the stops, the departure time and the lunch places are set in advance. Your driver cannot change them for one person, because everyone else is on the same plan. This is the main difference from a private tour.

Departures

Shared tours leave on set days [CONFIRM DEPARTURE DAYS]. Ask us for the next available dates.

Pick-up and drop-off

Pick-up is from your accommodation or a central meeting point [CONFIRM: hotel/riad pick-up or meeting point in Marrakech and Fes]. If you stay inside a medina where vehicles cannot go, we will tell you exactly where to meet.

Language

Your driver speaks English [CONFIRM other languages, e.g., French or Spanish]. Your fellow travellers may come from anywhere in the world.

Where you sleep

Hotels and riads on the route, and one night at Mouhou Luxury Camp in Erg Chebbi. Every party has its own room and tent. Accommodation on shared tours is [CONFIRM: same as private tours, or a different standard].

Shared 3-Day Marrakech Desert Tour (round trip)

The classic choice if you are staying in Marrakech and want to come back there. Two days take you out over the High Atlas, through Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley to Todra Gorge and Merzouga. The third day is the long one: you return from the desert to Marrakech by a different road, through N’Kob and the Draa Valley, in a single drive of around 9–10 hours. You will be tired, but you sleep in your Marrakech bed that night. See the shared Marrakech desert tour.

Shared 3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour

For travellers who want to cross the country rather than return. You see the south on the first two days, sleep in the dunes, then drive north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to Fes. It avoids repeating any road. See the shared Marrakech to Fes tour.

Shared 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour

The same idea in reverse. The longest drive comes first, so you reach the desert on the evening of Day 1. The next two days are shorter, through Todra and Dades, ending with Aït Ben Haddou and the Tichka pass into Marrakech. See the shared Fes to Marrakech tour.

The honest trade-offs of a shared tour

A shared tour is good value, and many travellers enjoy the company. But you should know what you give up.

  • You cannot change the plan. If you want an extra 20 minutes at Aït Ben Haddou, or to skip a stop, the group decides — in practice, the schedule decides.
  • You wait for others. Pick-ups at several hotels, toilet stops and photo stops take longer with more people.
  • Lunch stops are chosen for the group. They are usually roadside restaurants that handle groups well. Lunch is not included, so you pay for what you order.
  • You may sit anywhere in the vehicle. Seats are not assigned [CONFIRM seating policy]. If you get car-sick, tell us in advance.
  • Early departures. Shared tours usually leave early to keep to time [CONFIRM departure time].
  • Group mood varies. Most groups are friendly. Occasionally you may share the road with people who are loud, late or not to your taste.

What does not change: you still get breakfast and dinner every day, the camel trek in Erg Chebbi (or a 4×4 transfer if you have back or knee problems), the campfire with Berber drums, and a tent with your own bathroom.

Who should book private instead

Choose a private tour if: – You have young children who need flexible stops, or child seats [CONFIRM availability]. – You want to photograph at sunrise, sunset or in specific places at your own pace. – You are a group of four or more. At that size a private vehicle can cost about the same per person as shared seats [CONFIRM by quote]. – You have mobility needs or health issues that make long fixed days hard. – You want to change the route, add a night or stop somewhere special.

Not sure which fits you? Our guide to private vs shared desert tours in Morocco walks through common situations and the cost logic.

Prices for shared tours

Shared prices are per seat, per person. The vehicle cost is spread across everyone in the group, which is why shared tours cost less than private ones for small parties. What changes the price: – The route. One-way and round-trip tours have different costs. – Room type. Solo travellers have their own room and tent, which may mean a supplement. – Season. Busy periods may be priced differently [CONFIRM]. – Children. [CONFIRM CHILD PRICING].

Frequently asked questions

Will I share a tent with people I do not know?

No. Every booking has its own tent with a private shower and toilet. A couple shares a tent with each other; a solo traveller has a tent alone.

How many people are in a shared group?

The maximum is [CONFIRM MAXIMUM GROUP SIZE]. Many departures have fewer. If you want a guaranteed small group, a private tour is the only way to be sure.

Can I choose the seat at the front?

Seats are not reserved in advance [CONFIRM]. If you suffer from travel sickness, tell us when you book and we will do our best.

What happens if not enough people book my date?

[CONFIRM POLICY — e.g., the tour still runs / you are offered another date / an upgrade to private at a price.] We will tell you as early as possible.

Is a shared desert tour suitable for families?

It can be, for families with older children who are comfortable with long fixed days. With young children, a private tour gives you the freedom to stop when you need to.

Do shared tours go to the same camp as private tours?

Yes, shared tours use Mouhou Luxury Camp in Erg Chebbi [CONFIRM same tent category as private tours].

Planning your trip around a shared tour

Choosing between the three routes

Start with where you are when the tour begins and where you need to be when it ends. Our shared desert tours all last three days, so the real choice is about direction, not length. If your flight home leaves from Marrakech, the round trip or the Fes to Marrakech crossing both work. If you are travelling on to Fes, Chefchaouen or Tangier, the Marrakech to Fes route saves you a long drive back.

When to send your request

Spring and autumn departures of our shared desert tours are the most popular, so send your dates as early as you can. We confirm a seat only after we have checked availability for your date [CONFIRM how far in advance seats are usually confirmed]. If your dates are flexible, tell us; it helps us place you on a departure that suits you.

Fitting the desert into a longer trip

Most travellers fit shared desert tours between two city stays. A common pattern is two or three nights in Marrakech, the desert crossing, then two nights in Fes. Avoid booking a flight or train for the evening the tour ends: long driving days can run late because of traffic, roadworks or weather.

What a typical day feels like

Morning

Days on shared desert tours start early. After breakfast you meet the vehicle and the rest of the group, and the driver explains the plan for the day, including roughly where lunch will be. On the first morning, the first hour may include a few stops to collect other travellers [CONFIRM pick-up arrangements].

On the road

The driver stops for photos, toilets and a stretch at regular points along the route. On shared desert tours these stops are planned for the whole group, so they are usually short. If you need an extra break because you feel unwell, just say so; drivers are used to it.

Evening in the dunes

On the desert night you take a small bag, leave your main luggage behind [CONFIRM where it is kept] and ride into Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon. Dinner at camp is often when the group gets to know each other. You can join the campfire, or slip away early to your own tent.

Packing for shared desert tours

Space in the vehicle is shared with other travellers, so pack light.

  • One main bag per person and a small daypack. Tell us in advance if you travel with large or extra luggage [CONFIRM luggage limits].
  • A warm layer, even in spring and autumn. Desert nights cool down quickly.
  • A scarf or hat and sunglasses for wind and sun in the dunes.
  • A power bank for the long road days [CONFIRM charging at camp].
  • Travel-sickness tablets if you need them; the mountain roads have many bends.
  • Your passport, which hotels and camps ask to see when you check in.

Shared desert tours through the year

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the busiest season for shared desert tours, with mild days and cool nights. Book early if you have fixed dates.

Summer (June to August)

Shared desert tours also run in summer [CONFIRM summer departures], but Merzouga is very hot in the afternoon, often above 40 °C. The camel ride starts late in the day, and the long drives are tiring in the heat. Bring plenty of water and light clothes that cover your arms and legs.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is the second busy season for shared desert tours. Temperatures fall again and the light is soft for photos.

Winter (December to February)

Days are often bright, but desert nights can be near freezing and snow can affect the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Pack warm clothes and accept that timings may change for safety [CONFIRM winter departure days].

More questions about shared desert tours

Can a friend I met while travelling join me?

Yes. Tell us how many people are in your party and whether you will share a room and tent or want one each (a solo traveller pays €230).

Can I join halfway or leave early?

Our shared desert tours follow a fixed route, so joining or leaving in the middle is not normally possible [CONFIRM]. If you need that flexibility, ask us about a private tour.

What if I get ill during the trip?

Tell your driver straight away. He can help you find a pharmacy or a doctor in the towns along the route. This is one reason we recommend travel insurance for every traveller.

Is there a dress code?

No, but loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees are comfortable in the sun and respectful in villages. Bring closed shoes or sturdy sandals for walking at Aït Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge.

Before you book: a short checklist

  • Your preferred route and date, plus one backup date
  • The number of travellers, and whether anyone needs their own room and tent
  • Where you are staying, so we can confirm the pick-up point
  • Any dietary needs, health issues or travel sickness
  • Your onward plans after the tour ends

Sending these in your first message is the fastest way to get a clear answer about seats on our shared desert tours.
