4-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour (No Road Repeated)

Our 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is a private loop through the High Atlas, the gorges and the Sahara for travellers who prefer shorter driving days. This 4 day desert tour from Marrakech takes you to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga and back on a full loop. You go out through the High Atlas, the Dades and Todra gorges, and come back through Rissani, N’Kob and the palm groves of the Draa Valley. The extra day is used for one simple thing: a night in Agdz, so the long road home is split in two.

Sunset on the Erg Chebbi dunes, the turning point of the loop.

On day one you walk up through the earthen village that UNESCO lists as the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou.

The result is a trip with no day of 10 hours in the car, more time in the gorges and an evening in a quiet oasis town that most desert tours only drive past. It is a private tour, with your own vehicle and English-speaking driver, for travellers who want to see the south without rushing it.

Why a 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour changes the trip

The classic 3-day desert trip from Marrakech to Merzouga is a good trip, but its last day is about 9.5–10 hours of driving. For many people, a day like that is the hardest part of a holiday.

Here is what the fourth day gives you instead:

  • Shorter days. No single day is longer than about 6–7 hours of driving.
  • More time in the Dades Gorge on day two, including the famous hairpin road, before you head to the desert.
  • A slower desert morning. After sunrise you can visit Khamlia and the Rissani market instead of rushing west.
  • A night in the Draa Valley. Agdz sits among long palm groves under the Kissane mountain. You arrive with time for a walk before dinner.
  • An afternoon return to Marrakech on day four, not a late-night one.

Highlights

  • Crossing the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka pass (approx. 2,260 m)
  • Walking up through Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar
  • The Dades Gorge hairpin bends at Tissadrine and the “Monkey Fingers” rocks
  • Todra Gorge, with rock walls roughly 300 m high
  • A camel trek at sunset and a night in a private tent with its own bathroom
  • Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa music
  • The Draa Valley: palm groves, earthen kasbahs and a calm evening in Agdz

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Tichka – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley

Approx. 320–350 km · 6–7 h of driving plus stops · Overnight: Dades Valley · Meals: dinner

Your driver collects you from your hotel or riad in the morning [CONFIRM pick-up time] (for riads deep in the medina, we agree a nearby meeting point). The road rises through Berber villages and walnut trees to the Tichka pass for a photo stop. Down the southern side, the landscape turns dry and red.

At Aït Ben Haddou you walk through the old ksar — its earth houses, narrow passages and the hilltop granary with views over the valley (visit, about an hour [CONFIRM local guide included or optional]). Lunch nearby at your own cost.

In the afternoon you pass Ouarzazate (photo stop; inside visits to Atlas Studios or Taourirt Kasbah optional [CONFIRM]), follow the Skoura palm oasis (photo stop) and go through Kalaat M’Gouna, the rose town. You reach the Dades Valley for dinner and the night at a hotel or riad such as Riad Gabsi or Ksar Sultan, or similar [CONFIRM].

Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Camel trek to camp

Approx. 300 km · about 5–6 h of driving plus stops · Overnight: desert camp · Meals: breakfast, dinner

Because there is no rush on this tour, the morning goes deeper into the Dades Gorge. You drive past the “Monkey Fingers” rocks and up to the viewpoint above the zig-zag road at Tissadrine (photo stops; road conditions permitting).

Then east to Todra Gorge (visit). Walk into the narrow part, where the river runs between rock walls about 300 m high, and watch climbers on the cliffs if you are lucky. Lunch in the Todra area, not included.

The afternoon drive crosses open plains via Tinjdad and Erfoud (pass through) to Merzouga. Leave your main bags in the vehicle [CONFIRM] and bring a small overnight bag. Your camel trek into Erg Chebbi lasts about [CONFIRM camel ride duration, approx. 1–1.5 h], timed for the sunset. Prefer not to ride? A 4×4 can take you to camp instead.

Night at Mouhou Luxury Camp in your private tent with its own shower and toilet, after dinner and a campfire with Berber drums.

Day 3: Sunrise – Khamlia – Rissani – Alnif – N’Kob – Agdz

Approx. 300 km · about 5 h of driving plus stops · Overnight: Agdz · Meals: breakfast, dinner

Watch the sunrise from the dunes, ride back and have breakfast [CONFIRM location]. This morning has room to breathe.

  • Khamlia (optional visit [CONFIRM]): a small village whose families, many with roots in sub-Saharan Africa, keep the Gnawa music tradition alive. Musicians often play for visitors; a contribution is customary.
  • Rissani (short visit): the old market town of the Tafilalt. On souk days — traditionally Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday [verify] — the market is busy with spices, dates and the donkey “parking”.
  • Alnif (pass through or short stop): an area known for fossils.
  • N’Kob (photo stop): a village with many old kasbahs. Lunch here or nearby, not included.

You reach Agdz in the late afternoon. Before dinner, take a walk into the palm grove or simply sit on a terrace and watch the light change on the Kissane mountain. Night in a kasbah or guesthouse in the Agdz area [CONFIRM property name].

Day 4: Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Tichka – Marrakech

Approx. 230 km · about 5–5.5 h of driving plus stops · Overnight: none · Meals: breakfast

After breakfast, an optional short walk in the Draa palm groves [CONFIRM if guided walk is included]. The road then climbs north over the Tifernine pass to Ouarzazate (pass through) and over the Tichka pass once more — the only stretch of the loop you drive twice. Lunch on the way, not included. You arrive in Marrakech in the mid to late afternoon, around [CONFIRM typical arrival time].

Is this tour right for you?

Good for: couples and families who want a calmer pace; older travellers; photographers who want afternoon and morning light in the oasis; anyone who found the idea of a 10-hour drive off-putting.

Less good for: travellers who want more time in the dunes themselves — the 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour with 2 desert nights adds a full day in the Sahara. Heading to Fes afterwards? The 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour with a full day in the Sahara ends in Fes instead.

Practical tips

  • Seasons: spring and autumn are most comfortable. Summer days in the desert often pass 40 °C; winter nights can be close to freezing, and Tichka can see snow.
  • Packing: a small overnight bag for the camp; warm layer; sun hat; scarf; sunscreen; power bank.
  • Cash: dirhams for lunches, tips, Khamlia musicians and market shopping in Rissani.
  • Children: the shorter driving days make this one of our easier desert loops for families.
  • Food: vegetarian and vegan meals on request.
  • Weather changes: in heavy rain or snow, the route can change for safety.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Agdz?

Not a lot — and that is the point. You can walk in the palm groves, see old kasbahs and relax after two busy days. It is a calm oasis town, not a tourist centre.

How much longer is this than the 3-day tour, in practice?

One extra day and one extra night. Total driving is about the same; it is just spread over four days, with a longer gorge visit and a slower desert morning.

Can we have a second night in the desert instead of Agdz?

Yes, that is our 5-day tour, which adds a desert day and a night in Ouarzazate. On a private tour we can also discuss other changes — ask us.

Is the Agdz accommodation a traditional kasbah?

We use a kasbah or guesthouse in the Agdz area [CONFIRM property]. Tell us if you have a preference and we confirm what is available for your dates.

Do we visit Khamlia and Rissani, or only drive through?

Rissani is a short visit, ideally on a market day. Khamlia is an optional stop [CONFIRM] to hear Gnawa music. Both fit easily because day three is shorter.

Is the Tichka road driven twice?

Yes, the stretch between Marrakech and Ouarzazate is the only part of the loop you see twice, because it is the main road through the High Atlas.

Desert landscape in the south on the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour
No driving day on this loop is longer than about 7 hours.

Day 3, hour by hour

The desert morning is the calmest part of the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour. Times are approximate and depend on the season [CONFIRM].

  • Early morning: climb a dune for sunrise, then ride back to the edge of the erg.
  • After breakfast: shower, repack your overnight bag and meet your driver.
  • Mid-morning: Khamlia (optional) and the Rissani market.
  • Lunch: in N’Kob or nearby, at your own cost.
  • Late afternoon: arrival in Agdz, with time for a walk before dinner.

4 days or 3 days: how to decide

Choose the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour if you:

  • dislike long days in a vehicle, or travel with children or older relatives
  • want time in the Dades Gorge, not just a photo stop
  • like the idea of a quiet evening in an oasis town

Choose the 3-day desert trip if your time is tight and one long final day does not worry you.

Packing for four days

You only need a small overnight bag for the camp night; your main luggage stays behind [CONFIRM]. For the whole 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, bring layers, because mountain passes and desert nights are cool for much of the year.

Add a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf for sand, and shoes you can walk in at Aït Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge.

Photography tips along the loop

Light is softest early and late. On the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour you get a sunset and a sunrise in the dunes, plus a late-afternoon arrival in Agdz, when the palm groves glow.

Ask before photographing people, and protect your camera from sand with a simple plastic bag on the camel ride.

Travelling with children or older travellers

Shorter driving days make the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour one of our easier loops for families. Tell us the ages of children when you ask for a quote, so we can plan breaks and the camel ride. If anyone finds the camel uncomfortable, a 4×4 can take them to camp.

What the driving feels like

Most of the road is good tarmac, with mountain bends on the Tichka pass and in the gorges. On the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour you stop every one to two hours for a visit, a viewpoint or a coffee, so you are rarely in the vehicle for long without a break. Your driver adjusts the pace to you, and you can ask for extra stops at any time.

Seasonal notes

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times for a 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour. In summer, plan your walks for early morning and late afternoon. In winter, pack warm clothes for the camp night and allow for possible snow on the Tichka pass.

More questions

Can we start on any day?

Yes. It is a private tour, so you choose the date. Send it with your group size and we confirm availability.

Can we end in Fes instead of Marrakech?

Yes, but that is a different route. The 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour ends in Fes instead of looping back.

Is there time to rest during the trip?

Yes. The evening in Agdz is free, and the morning after the desert night is unhurried. That is the main reason people choose a 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour over the 3-day version.

Is the desert camp the same as on other tours?

Yes. Every desert night is at Mouhou Luxury Camp, in a private tent with its own shower and toilet. See what a night at our Merzouga desert camp looks like.

Can we add a 4×4 trip around the dunes?

Yes, as an extra. It fits best on the desert morning of the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, before you head west [CONFIRM timing and price].
