Fes to Merzouga tours are the quickest way to reach the Sahara from northern Morocco, and this page helps you decide where your trip should end. Our Fes desert tours take you from Fes to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, where you ride a camel to camp and sleep in a private tent with its own bathroom. The first question to answer isn’t “how many days?” but “where do you need to be afterwards?” If your next train, flight or riad is in Fes, choose a round trip (2, 3 or 4 days).
If you’re heading on to Marrakech, choose a one-way tour that crosses the desert and ends there. This page explains both, with honest driving times, so you can pick in a few minutes.

If you have a spare day before or after the desert, the Medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best explored on foot with a local guide.
We are a local team founded by Sahara natives from Merzouga. Most tours on this page are private; one shared option is listed below.
Step 1: Return to Fes, or continue to Marrakech?
| Your situation | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your hotel, train or flight is in Fes after the desert | Round trip from Fes | You come back to where you started. Leave your big luggage at your riad. |
| You’ll travel on to Marrakech anyway | One-way, Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga | You don’t drive the same 460 km twice. The desert becomes part of your journey south. |
| You’re flying home from Fes, Casablanca or Rabat | Usually round trip | Fes is closer to the northern airports than Merzouga or Marrakech [CONFIRM transfer options]. |
| You’ll end your Morocco trip in the desert and fly out from Errachidia | Ask us for a one-way Fes → Merzouga trip [CONFIRM offered] | See Errachidia desert tours for the airport side. |
A quick rule of thumb: a round trip from Fes in 2 days means about 16 hours of driving. A one-way tour from Fes to Marrakech in 3 days covers more ground, but with no road driven twice.
Round-Trip Fes to Merzouga Tours: Back to Fes
All three round trips use the same main road south: over the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Midelt, then along the Ziz Valley to Merzouga. It’s about 460 km each way, roughly 7.5–8.5 hours of pure driving before stops. The difference between the tours is how much time you get at the other end.
| 2 days | 3 days | 4 days | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nights | 1 (camp) | 2 (hotel + camp) | 3 (Todra Gorge + camp + hotel) |
| Time near the dunes | Sunset to sunrise | Sunset, sunrise and a full local day | Sunset, sunrise and a free day |
| Extra sights | Middle Atlas, Ziz Valley | Khamlia, Rissani, nomad family | Todra Gorge walk, Tinjdad khettaras |
| Pace | Fast — two long drives back to back | Relaxed — rest day in the middle | Moderate — long first day, then easier |
| Best for | Short on time, OK with long drives | First-timers, families, couples | Travellers who want a gorge too |
| Price per person | €340 (2 travellers) | €380 (2 travellers) | €520 (2 travellers) |
2-day round trip: the shortest option
You leave Fes in the morning, reach Merzouga in the late afternoon and ride to camp at sunset. Next morning: sunrise, then the drive back to Fes, arriving in the evening. It works, but it is mostly road. → 2-Day Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour (Return to Fes)
3-day round trip: same road, one more night
The long drives are exactly the same as the 2-day trip. What you gain is a hotel night on arrival and a full day around the dunes before your camp night. For most people based in Fes, this is the trip we suggest first. → 3-Day Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour with a Full Day in the Dunes
4-day round trip: add Todra Gorge
On the way south you turn west at Errachidia and sleep near Todra Gorge. You walk the gorge in the morning, reach the dunes in the afternoon, and spend two nights near Erg Chebbi before driving back. → 4-Day Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour via Todra Gorge

One-way: Fes → Merzouga → Marrakech
If Marrakech is your next stop, a one-way tour is almost always the better use of your time. You drive from Fes to Merzouga for your desert night, then continue west through the oases, gorges and kasbahs of the south — Todra, Dades, Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou, depending on the tour — before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech.
The catch: Merzouga to Marrakech is a long way (around 550 km by the most direct road, often split over one or two days). Shorter versions mean long days.
| Tour | Style | Pace | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days, Fes to Marrakech | Private | Very fast — two very long days | 2-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour via Merzouga |
| 3 days, Fes to Marrakech | Private | The classic balance | 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour (Private) |
| 3 days, Fes to Marrakech | Shared small group, private tent | Same idea, lower cost, fixed plan | Shared 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour |
| 4 days, Fes to Marrakech | Private | Adds a full desert day | 4-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour with a Full Desert Day |
| 5 days, Fes to Marrakech | Private | Relaxed, shorter driving days | 5-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour at a Relaxed Pace |

Private or shared from Fes?
Private tours give you your own vehicle and English-speaking driver. You choose the pick-up time and can stop when you want. The price per person falls as your group grows.
Shared small-group tours put you in a vehicle with other travellers on a fixed plan, which lowers the cost. Even on shared tours, you get your own private room and your own private tent — never a shared tent with strangers. On this page, the shared option is the one-way trip to Marrakech. Shared round trips from Fes: [CONFIRM whether offered, days and prices].

What all our Fes to Merzouga tours include
Whichever trip you choose, these are standard:
- Pick-up from your accommodation in Fes (or the nearest gate to your riad in the medina) and drop-off at the end
- Air-conditioned 4×4 or comfortable minibus, fuel and road taxes
- English-speaking driver
- Camel trek in Erg Chebbi to camp and back — or a 4×4 transfer if you have back or knee problems
- A private tent with its own shower and toilet at Mouhou Luxury Camp
- Breakfast and dinner every day; vegetarian or vegan meals on request
- Campfire evening with Berber drum music
Lunch isn’t included: your driver will point you to good local places. Bring cash in dirhams.
Curious about the camp itself? Read our Merzouga desert camp: what your night in the Sahara looks like. For details of the ride, see the overnight camel trek in Erg Chebbi.
What to expect on the road from Fes
- The Middle Atlas first. Within two hours of Fes you’re in cedar forest near Ifrane and Azrou. Barbary macaques often wait by the road. They’re endangered — please don’t feed them.
- A big change in landscape. After Midelt, the green hills turn into dry plateau, then the red cliffs of the Ziz Gorges and the palm groves of the Ziz Valley.
- Long days are normal. Merzouga is far from every big city. No road shortens the 460 km from Fes.
- Weather matters. Snow can close the mountain roads in winter, and summer days in Merzouga often pass 40 °C. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable seasons. If weather forces a change, we adjust the route.
How prices for Fes desert tours are worked out
We send a quote instead of showing one fixed price, because a private trip’s cost depends on:
- The number of travellers (vehicle and driver costs are shared).
- Private or shared.
- The number of nights and hotel choices.
- The season.
Indicative prices per person: for 2 travellers, 2 days €340, 3 days €380, 4 days €520 — less per person in larger groups. Deposit, payment methods and cancellation: [CONFIRM DEPOSIT %], [CONFIRM PAYMENT METHODS], [CONFIRM CANCELLATION POLICY] — see our booking terms and conditions.
FAQs about Fes desert tours
How far is Merzouga from Fes? About 460 km. Expect 7.5–8.5 hours of pure driving, and around [CONFIRM total hours] hours with lunch and photo stops.
Is it better to start a desert tour in Fes or in Marrakech? The desert is closer to Fes by road, so round trips from Fes are shorter. If you’re visiting both cities, a one-way tour between them is the most efficient plan. The direction depends only on where you are first.
Can a round trip from Fes include Todra Gorge? Yes — the 4-day round trip includes a night at Todra Gorge. The 2- and 3-day round trips do not. Dades Valley and Aït Ben Haddou are only on the one-way routes to Marrakech.
Can I start in Fes and end in Merzouga? We can usually arrange a one-way trip ending in Merzouga, for example if you’re flying out of Errachidia or continuing by bus [CONFIRM offered and price].
Do you pick up from riads inside the Fes medina? Vehicles can’t enter most of the old medina. We meet you at the nearest gate or square, and your riad can help with your bags.
Can I store luggage while I’m in the desert? On a round trip, most Fes riads will keep your suitcase until you return. On all tours, bring a small overnight bag for the camp night; your main bag stays in the vehicle [CONFIRM].
Which Fes desert tour is best for families with children? The 3-day round trip, because it has a rest day between the two long drives. For one-way trips, the 4- or 5-day Fes to Marrakech tours are easier on children than the 2- or 3-day versions.

Planning your desert trip from Fes
Choosing the right number of days
Most Fes to Merzouga tours take two to four days, and the length decides how the trip feels, not the distance. The road is about 460 km whichever trip you choose. What changes is how much time you spend near the dunes once you arrive, and how tired you are when you get there. If you can spare three days, two hard driving days become a trip with a proper rest in the middle.
A simple test helps: count the hours you would happily sit in a vehicle in one day. If the answer is under six, choose one of the longer Fes to Merzouga tours, or a one-way route to Marrakech with shorter legs.
Best time of year
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for Fes to Merzouga tours. Days are warm, nights at camp are cool, and the Middle Atlas roads are clear. April can be windy around Erg Chebbi and October is busy, so ask early for those months.
In winter, snow sometimes reaches Ifrane and Azrou. The roads are usually cleared quickly, but your driver may change the timing. Winter Fes to Merzouga tours reward you with clear skies and bright, cold nights, so pack a warm jacket and a hat.
In summer, Merzouga often passes 40 °C. Fes to Merzouga tours still run, but the day is planned around the heat: an early start, a long lunch break, and the camel ride as late as the light allows.
Hour by hour: the first day from Fes
The first day follows a similar rhythm on every round trip. Times are approximate and depend on your pick-up time [CONFIRM PICK-UP TIME].
- Morning: pick-up in Fes, then the climb to Ifrane and the cedar forest near Azrou.
- Late morning: high plateau towards Midelt, with a coffee or toilet stop.
- Lunch: in Midelt (not included).
- Afternoon: the Ziz Gorges and the Ziz Valley palm groves, with photo stops.
- Late afternoon: arrival in Merzouga, then the camel ride to camp or check-in at your hotel, depending on the tour.
On all Fes to Merzouga tours, your driver adjusts the stops to your group. If someone feels car sick or needs a break, just say so.
What to pack for the desert
You need less than you think. On most Fes to Merzouga tours your main bag stays in the vehicle on the camp night [CONFIRM], so pack a small overnight bag with:
- A warm layer for the evening, even in spring
- A scarf or hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- A torch or phone light and a power bank
- Toiletries and any medication
- Cash in dirhams for lunches and tips
Wear comfortable trousers for the camel ride and shoes you can easily shake sand out of. Sandals are fine at camp.
Can we travel with a baby or toddler?
Yes, on a private trip. Tell us the child’s age so we can plan breaks and a child seat [CONFIRM child seats]. For small children, the 3-day round trip is much easier than the 2-day one, because the rest day breaks up the two long drives.
Round trip or one-way: three real examples
A couple with a train from Fes to Tangier: a round trip suits them. Of the three round-trip Fes to Merzouga tours, the 3-day version gives them a calm day near the dunes and brings them back the evening before their train.
A family flying home from Marrakech: a one-way route works better. They see the desert and the southern gorges on the way, instead of booking one of the Fes to Merzouga tours and then a long separate transfer.
A solo traveller on a budget, heading south: the shared 3-day trip to Marrakech is often the best value among our Fes to Merzouga tours, with a shared vehicle but a private tent.
More questions before you book
Can we start in the afternoon?
It is possible, but we don’t recommend it. Fes to Merzouga tours need a full day of daylight to reach the dunes before sunset. An afternoon start usually means an extra night on the way, for example in Midelt [CONFIRM].
Is the road safe?
The main road is paved and in good condition, with mountain sections in the Middle Atlas. Our drivers know it well, drive in daylight where possible and take regular breaks. Police checkpoints are normal on Fes to Merzouga tours and usually take only a moment.
Can we stop longer in Ifrane or Azrou?
Yes, on a private trip. Tell your driver in the morning. Longer stops on Fes to Merzouga tours mean a later arrival, so keep them short in winter, when the sun sets early.
How far ahead should we ask?
For spring, autumn and holiday periods, ask a few weeks ahead. In quieter months, a few days can be enough [CONFIRM]. Send your dates and we reply with availability for our Fes to Merzouga tours and a clear quote.
Can we combine the desert with a day in the Fes medina?
Yes, and we recommend it. Most Fes to Merzouga tours leave early in the morning and return in the evening, so plan your medina day for the day before you leave or the day after you return. A local guide makes the maze of lanes much easier to enjoy.
